Catherine Carter, Theatre Professional & Secondary Teacher
For over twenty years, I've been teaching and directing theatre with young people and adults. This includes delivering the London Academy of Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) syllabus, preparing students for drama school auditions, and boosting adults' acting skills and confidence. My classes are fun and relaxed with achievable goals and positive outcomes. I help young people develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to make great first impressions, secure jobs, and improve their interactions. Now, I'm excited to work with the IMEB syllabus in Australia, supporting everyone in enhancing their communication skills.
I am able and experienced in delivering both face to face and online sessions.
I deliver group drama skills classes for young people from years 5 to 12. Each term working perhaps on a certain writer, theatre topic or theme we finish with a term small scale performance relating to the work for parents and friend with one larger performance a year. The young people have a voice in how and what is performed giving students agency to the content of there classes. Our focus is building drama skills, confidence, communication and relationship interactions skills. Recent work has focused on devising theatre around conspiracy theories, monolouges and duologues, Shakespeare sonnets and speeches and the occasional music number for popular musicals. Projects going forwards will include a Radio Play and a live Production of A Christmas Carol.
Presently we meet on a Friday evening in term times in Brighton from 6:30 till 8:30.
One-to-one sessions offer personalised attention, allowing for a customised approach that specifically addresses the individual's needs. These sessions provide flexibility, adapting in real-time based on the person's progress and feedback, while also ensuring privacy and focused support in a comfortable setting. This personalized environment fosters trust between the facilitator and the individual, enabling immediate, tailored feedback and adjustments. The pace can be matched to the individual's learning style, enhancing engagement and commitment. Additionally, sensitive topics can be discussed with greater confidentiality, and precise goal setting leads to clear, measurable outcomes.
I offer the option of small group sessions for students as an option to deliver speech and language skills in small groups of two or three offers numerous benefits including:
1. Peer Learning: Participants can learn from each other’s strengths and weaknesses, providing diverse examples and reinforcing skills through observation.
2. Increased Interaction: Smaller groups ensure that each participant gets ample opportunity to practice and receive feedback.
3. Collaborators can engage in dialogues and role-playing exercises, promoting practical application of skills in real-life scenarios.
4. Motivation and Support: Peers can encourage and motivate each other, fostering a supportive and positive learning atmosphere.
5. Cost-Effective: Small group sessions are more affordable than one-on-one interventions, making them accessible to more people.
6. Social Skills Development: Interacting in a group helps participants develop essential social skills such as turn-taking, listening, and responding appropriately.
7. Reduced Anxiety: The small group setting can be less intimidating than larger groups, reducing anxiety and creating a comfortable space for practice.
8. Dynamic Feedback: Participants receive feedback not only from the facilitator but also from their peers, providing multiple perspectives.
9. Efficient Use of Resources: Facilitators can manage time and resources effectively, addressing the needs of multiple participants simultaneously.
10. Balanced Attention: Each participant still receives personalized attention while benefiting from the collaborative group dynamic.
An exciting option for students is to take Performance Examinations. Many students wish to learn speech, drama and theatre arts as a leisure activity and would like to receive recognition of their progress/achievement. Students may present a wide variety of items in the Performance Examination as the syllabus allows for the teacher and candidate to choose the performance pieces. Candidates in this area may progress to the Diploma of Performance. For more information about the International Music Examinations Board (IMEB) website and to look at the syllabi click here
